The driver of a white BMW estate was shocked to see smoke coming out from the exhaust and from under the dashboard.
Firefighters were deployed at around 9:30am to the fire in Maiden Newton, where the driver stopped in the nearest safe place at a junction.
The driver was able to pull over and exit the vehicle without injury, minutes before flames engulfed the BMW 3 Series Touring.
The vehicle was mostly destroyed by the time that the fire crew from Dorchester Fire Station arrived, due to the rapid nature synthetic materials in modern cars burn.
Firefighters wore breathing apparatus, as flames from vehicle fires are highly toxic due to the chemical composition of the synthetic materials used in cars. A main byproduct of fires is a lethal concentration of carbon monoxide, which is an odourless, colourless and tasteless gas.
Two hose reel jets were used to extinguish the vehicle – or what was left of it.
