‘I’ll be spending Christmas alone’: Dorchester event reveals hidden issue

Festive Service at Dorchester Library

Dozens of older people gathered at Dorchester Library & Learning Centre last month for a festive lunch aimed at tackling social isolation over the Christmas period.

The Royal Voluntary Service event on 18th December brought together 26 guests, many of whom would otherwise have spent Christmas alone. Despite challenging weather conditions, attendees from the local RVS Home Library Service and various library groups enjoyed a buffet lunch provided by the charity and the Morrisons Foundation.

The gathering formed part of RVS’s national campaign to ensure vulnerable and elderly community members have companionship during the festive season.

Entertainment came from local group Cloud 9 Chorus, who performed festive songs and led carol singing. Children from Prince of Wales First School in Dorchester contributed handmade placemats, individual Christmas cards and artwork for guests to take home.

Callum Bremner, High Sheriff of Dorset, attended the event and praised the work of RVS Home Library Service volunteers across their various roles in the county.

Organisers said the event received positive feedback, with several attendees expressing how meaningful the gathering was given they would be spending Christmas on their own.

Royal Voluntary Service operates the Home Library Service in Dorset and BCP, with volunteers delivering books to residents unable to visit libraries themselves. Those interested in the service can contact the local RVS office on 01305 236666 or email [email protected].
