Mark Hix launches Meet the Producer series of events at The Fox Inn

Mark Hix is known for his careful sourcing of responsibly produced food and drink and the subsequent relationships he builds with suppliers. So, this winter he will be welcoming guest producers to host a series of very special dinners at The Fox Inn (Corscombe, Dorset), giving Fox guests an opportunity to meet the producers and learn about how their food and drink is made.

The series kicks off in the New Year with Jason Barber, who co-founded Black Cow Vodka with his business partner Paul Archard, making the smoothest vodka in the world purely from milk.

After 300 years of cheesemaking within the Barber family, Jason saw the waste that was created when making cheese and decided to turn the whey into vodka. Guests will hear the story of how Black Cow Vodka came about before tasting Black Cow vodka cocktails alongside a special menu created by Mark, which will, of course, include the Black Cow Cheddar. There will be no mention of dry January in our pub this year!

Our menus change every day based on the local produce that has been brought into us, or new producers I have found in the area – whether that’s homegrown fruit and vegetables, mushrooms from our local forager or pigs that have been reared especially for us. Our series of events is a great opportunity for the producer to tell their story and introduce their delicious food and drink to our guests first-hand.

Just a stones’ throw from The Fox Inn, Karen and David Richards cure and smoke their range of award-winning charcuterie which will be paired to Gilt & Flint’s beers on February 2nd. Based at the beautiful Haye Farm in the AONB in East Devon, Dan Fitzpatrick and his business partner Jason Slade use age-old traditional brewing techniques to create organic, modern, new world beers. Sustainable farming means that their agricultural by-product goes to feed the free-range livestock on the farm which repay them by fertilising the flint fields. All of this will come together as Dan, Karen and David join Mark for an evening of local cured meats and beer.

And as we enter spring, we welcome John Wright, mushroom hunter, renowned forager and author of numerous River Cottage books. What John doesn’t know about foraging isn’t worth knowing. The absolute oracle on wild food his fascinating stories will have you engaged for the whole evening, while trying new ingredients in our wild food menu.

The Cheese and Wine supper will see wine writer and expert Fiona Beckett join Rob Corbett of Castlewood Vineyards and Trish Maunder of Somerset Membrillo to host an evening with Mark celebrating British Wine Week. Get the low down on everything you could wish to know about growing vines and producing still and sparkling wines in the Devonshire countryside and why British wine is so very special. The wines will be paired to the South West cheeses showcased in Mark’s menu, and explained by Trish Maunder.
